Physical security encompasses anything that has to do with your safety. It can be as simple as a locked door or as elaborate as multiple layers of armed bodyguards.
Be forewarned though because persons who are out to harm you, may use social engineering strategies to do so. Social engineering, of course, uses the Internet as a means to an end – in harming your life. They may use the Internet in stalking you, etc. In today’s modern world, any person who has ill-mannered intentions against you will also use any technological means to get at you. This includes but not limited to altering the safety design of a particular facility.
Personally, you can outwit these people. In as simple as guarding your own property, you can do a number of things proactively before it’s too late. For example, always mark all of your valuables with your signature so you can claim them later once they are stolen/lost and recovered/found. However, use only ultraviolet markers as the value of these objects will diminish once you vandalize them where it will awkwardly look as graffiti already. Also take pictures of your valuables so you can provide police with proof once they are recovered/found in case they have been stolen/lost. Another form can be engraving or etching your property. There are also ceramic marking pens that you can use. Don’t worry though, they do not cut or scratch the surface. You can also punch some objects, especially those heavy ones like lawn mowers. Also, some products like your PDAs and MP3 players have individual security codes which can be traced back to their rightful owners. And of course, keeping a written record of your property whether in soft or hard copy will definitely not hurt.
Basic good housekeeping is another integral element in both your security and the security of your home. Basic good housekeeping consists of keeping the entrances, living rooms, halls and stairs in your house tidy. Any alteration is a good sign of an intruder. Keep furniture to a minimum so as to ensure that there is little chance of hiding places for intruders and stolen items. In that case, always keep lock any unoccupied cupboards, drawers and all empty spaces. Remember too to store items in the proper place after you have used them. And above all, always mow your lawn to prevent concealment. Concealment is a thief’s best friend.
Glazing protection is also a must if you are living in an urban area as in a flat or a condo. Remember, most casualties in a terrorist bomb blast are not from the bomb shrapnels themselves, they are caused by flying glass. A perfect example will be the 3M Scotchshield SCLARL400 Ultra High Performance Security Film. Then coat your building with polycarbonate.
