Home Security 101

One of the characters in the books of political thriller author Tom Clancy once said, "A good security system is to not have any security system at all." The character was referring to not installing any security system in his own residence. But I'm sure the skepticism in most of us will disagree. Most of us will feel assured even if we have just the most minimal kind of security system installed in our homes.

Also known as alarm systems, home security systems are classified into different kinds. The simplest one is the alarm that is wired to your electrical circuit. It is usually installed at the gates or at the windows of your home. Electrical circuit-triggered alarms are in turn divided into two: the open-circuit and the closed-circuit alarm. In the case of the former, the circuit is completed triggered by let's say opening the door where the alarm is installed for instance. On the other hand, the process for the closed-circuit alarm is the opposite.

Another form of home security system is the motion detector. Using radio waves, its alarm will be triggered when it senses an erratic reflection pattern of the radio waves. Motion detectors are usually installed in large corners of the house.

All of the above are classified into three types: the single premises alarms, the local alarm systems and the monitored alarm systems. The single premises alarm is limited only to warning the occupants of the house of a specific type of danger. A good example is the smoke detector.

Meanwhile, local alarm systems are installed mainly to just scare intruders away. Emitting very booming noises, these are considered as cheap and inefficient alarm systems intended for persons who are too lazy to opt getting monitoring for their alarms.

Monitored security systems in turn are divided into two: the telephone dialer system and the so-called continually monitored system. Although the latter is more expensive, there is only one real difference – if the telephone dialer system emits an alarm, the 911 operator nearest to your area will get an automated call. In the instance of the continually monitored system, a real person will initiate the call. This is precisely expensive because the manpower of the alarm company is involved.

Definitely, I am not like the character of Tom Clancy's novel. I will surely recommend for an alarm to be installed in your home. But in the end, I cannot justify an answer to the question of which particular system best suits your residence or SOHO (small office home office). You need to factor in various elements. If you belong to the A or B class, then hiring the most sophisticated security company may be a walk in the park for you. But if you don't have that much valuables in your home and you want to keep things frugal, a simple alarm system will do. Just make sure that the alarm company is operated 24 hours by a real person and not by automated machines. Ask them too their average response time in handling alarms. The average alarm firm charges from $15 to $20 per month.
